This painting of Jean Francois Champollion (1790-1832) was painted by Cogniet the same year that Champollion sent the French Academy the famous "Lettre a M. Dacier relative à l'alphabet des hiéroglyphes phonetiques," announcing his discovery of the syllabary used in Egyptian hieroglyphs.
