Jean Francois Champollion: portrait (1822)

Fig.1: Portrait of Jean Francois Champollion by Leon Cogniet (1822; Musee de Louvre).

This painting of Jean Francois Champollion (1790-1832) was painted by Cogniet the same year that Champollion sent the French Academy the famous "Lettre a M. Dacier relative à l'alphabet des hiéroglyphes phonetiques," announcing his discovery of the syllabary used in Egyptian hieroglyphs.
