Cynodont chronology

Cynodont chronology (after Botha et al 2008)

Cynodonts were therapsids or "mammal-like reptiles" whose fossil remains, as shown in this cladogram, extended  from the Late Permian to the Middle Triassic period.  They are among the few Late Permian synapsid groups to survive the massive extinctions occurring at about 252 mya at the Permian-Triassic boundary, as represented by several genera including Cynognathus, which lived well into the Middle Triassic.
