Autun: The Temptation of Eve by Gislebertus (ca. 1130 AD)

This limestone relief sculpture by Gislebertus, entitled "The Temptation of Eve," portrays Eve taking the apple from the tree symbolizing knowledge of good and evil.

The relief, now in the Musee Rolin in Autun, was originally in the nearby Cathedral of Saint-Lazare. It is dated at about 1130 AD. The serpent's head may be seen at right. The style has a flowing sensuality and naturalism which seem remarkable, given the Romanesque period of the work.
