The
House of the Greek Authors on rue de la Grille in Autun had a series of
floor mosaics. Among them were portraits of three Greek writers: the
poet Anacreon (582-485 BC); the philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC); and
Metrodorus, a 2nd century AD follower of Epicurus.
These
mosaics were made in the third phase of house construction, dating from
the 2nd century AD. They occupied the northern part (shaded orange) of
a room 6.2 meters wide and 10.5 meters long, which had an apse on the
south.
