Deir El Medina was a large town adjacent to the Temple and Palace complexes at El Amarna. Residents of the town were largely builders and and craftsmen who had their own temples and social hierarchy, led by families of overseers.

The rectangular houses each had 3-5 rooms and were flanked by parallel streets. This group of houses was excavated and mapped by Flinders Petrie (1891), from whose report the figure is taken.
