5th Dynasty Pyramid of Nefirirkare at Abusir

Pyramid of Nefirirkare at Abusir

Abusir, located between Giza and Saqqara, contained a number of pyramids and a large 5th Dynasty necropolis. Many of the pyramids were stripped of their stone coverings during the Roman period.

This photo shows the partly eroded brick core of the stepped pyramid of Nefirirkare.
The pyramid, dating from 2477-2467 BC, was unfinished at the death of Nefirirkare, the third king of the 5th Dynasty. The largest of fourteen pyramids at Abusir, it was originally 106 meters wide and 72 meters high, and is still 50 meters in height.
