Beni Hasan: 11th-12th Dynasty Cliff Tombs
    .

Cliff tombs at Beni Hasan.

Beni Hasan is a burial site located south of Memphis, with several dozen cliff tombs dating from the 11th through 12th Dynasties (ca 2000-1800 BC). Here and at other sites along the Nile, Middle Kingdom nomarchs or provincial governors were buried in such rock-cut tombs. In the 12th Dynasty the local stature of many provincial governors waned as the centralized power of pharoahs based in Thebes increased.
