Dendera: Temple of Hathor, rear view with ruined houses (1849 photo)     .

Rear facade of the Temple of Hathor at Dendera (photo: du Camp, 1852).

This view showing the rear facade of the Temple of Hathor, and adjacent ruined walls of Arab houses, was taken by Maxime du Camp in 1849. It was published 3 years later in his
work Egypte, Nubie, Syrie et Palestine (1852).

The caption (p.57) reads: "Great temple of Dendera (Tentyris); rear facade. Ruins of habitations in unfired bricks that surround it."

Half buried reliefs seen on the rear wall of the temple include a Ptolemaic depiction of Cleopatra and her son Caesarion dating from ca. 35 BC.
