Maxime du Camp, in an early photo, ca. 1852.

Maxime du Camp (1822-1894) was born in Paris. In the late 1840s he learned the salt print method from the French pioneer photographer Gustave le Gray. Du Camp then used this technique to produce some of the earliest documentary photographs of Egyptian sites. His first expedition through Egypt was made with the novelist Gustave Flaubert in 1848-1851.

The next year, in 1852, Du Camp published numerous prints from his
trips to Egypt and the Near East in a volume entitled Egypte, Nubie, Palestine, Syrie.
