Hawara: Mummy Portrait from the Ptolemaic era     .

Mummy Portrait from Hawara (Petrie Institute, Univ.College, London) .

Among the remains found at Hawara, a site in the Fayum, were numerous burials from the Graeco-Egyptian or Ptolemaic era (330-31 BC). This mummy portrait of a woman, typical of that period, was painted on the exterior of a coffin or sarcophagus. Besides the striking facial portraiture, considerable detail is shown of personal ornamentation such as the necklace, earrings, dress, and hairstyle.
