Mud-brick houses at Karanis    .

Houses in the Graeco-Roman town of Karanis (1923 photo)

Karanis was one of the largest towns among the Graeco-Roman settlements in the Fayum. The town was founded in the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphus II and settled by Roman army veterans and Greek colonists. Most buildings date from the 1st-3rd centuries AD.

This photo shows remains of a number of mud-brick dwellings found near the center of the town, which was abandoned in the 5th century AD.  Dry conditions have caused exceptional preservation of both the strucrtures, and related artifacts including many papyrus documents.
