Karanis was a Graeco-Roman agricultural town in the Fayum region established in the Ptolemaic period by Ptolemy II Philadelphus. It was colonized by Roman legionary veterans and Greek mercenaries, among others.

The site was first excavated by Grenfell and Hunt (1899), and later by Francis Kelsey (1923-5). The gridlike compartments of the town granary in Karanis are shown at right in this photo, taken shortly after excavation.
The site has yielded numerous papyrus documents from the Graeco-Roman era.
