Karnak: Papyrus Columns in Hypostyle Hall (1848 photo)    .

Papyrus columns in the Hypostyle Hall  (photo: du Camp 1848).

This early (1848) calotype by Maxime du Camp shows papyrus columns in the outer wall of the Hypostyle Hall, located in the temple complex of Amun at Karnak. The columns support architraves with hieroglyphic inscriptions showing the name of Amenophis III (Akhenaten), who began the temple complex. Other early images of  papyrus columns at Luxor may be seen in prints by Felix Teynard (1851) and Francis Frith (1858).
