Luxor: Hypostyle Hall (1848 photo)

Papyrus columns in the Hypostyle Hall at Luxor (photo: du Camp 1848).

This early (1848) calotype by Maxime du Camp shows papyrus columns in the outer wall of the Hypostyle Hall at Luxor. They support architraves with hieroglyphic inscriptions showing the name of Amenophis III (Akhenaten), who began the Temple complex. Other examples of  papyrus columns at Luxor may be seen in a slightly later (1851) print by Felix Teynard.
