Dionysias: Temple of Sobek-Re: winged sun disk motif on lintel    .

Lintel at entrance to Temple of Sobek-Re at Qasr Qarun

The Temple of Sobek-Re at Qasr Qarun in the Fayum town of Dionysias, dedicated to the crocodile deity Sobek,  is shown here after the restoration of its facade.  The structure dates from the early Ptolemaic period, built in about 320-300 BC.

Carved on the lintel is a typical motif from the Ptolemaic period, the winged sun disk. Originally this had two cobra heads emerging from a ball placed in the center of the wings.  Similar carvings are found on the entrance lintels of Ptolemaic temples throughout Egypt and Lower Nubia.
