John Gardner Wilkinson (1797-1875) was an English archaeologist and a pioneer Egyptologist. Coming to Egypt in 1821 and remaining for 12 years until 1833, he visited virtually all ancient sites then known, and recorded many inscriptions and other notable features. In 1825, Wilkinson surveyed a number of tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and began the classification system still in use, describing tombs KV1- 21.

His book Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians, first published in 1837, remained a prominent source through the 1880s, when abundant new information began to emerge from site investigations by Petrie and others.
