Map of the Fayum region, from Dahshur to Oxyrhynchus

Fayum sites (after Petrie 1891 and Grenfell et al. 1900).

The Fayum region, located 20-80 km west of the River Nile, was extensively drained in the Ptolemaic (ca. 330-31 BC) and Roman (31 BC-AD 410) periods. Numerous settlements spread during this time frame along small watercourses such as Bar Yosef,  and around Lake Quran in the northwestern part of the Fayum.
