Arles: Lead bars stamped with Imperial inscription

Lead bars from Germany, found at Roman Arles (Musée de l'Arles Antique; photo: Athena Review).

A stack of molded lead ingots displayed at the Musée de l'Arles Antique are each stamped with a line of typical Imperial information on commodity revenues.

The source of the metal is stamped on the right side of the bars as Plumb. Germ. ("lead from Germania"). Marked as well is Imp. Caes. ("Imperial Caesar"), indicating that a percentage of the revenue from the sale of this commodity belonged to the Roman emperor.

Also included are abbreviations for Lucius Flavius Verucla, a Roman official who oversaw the production of lead in the province of Germania Inferior (Lower Germany).
