Lyon: The Mosaic of Bacchus

Mosaic of Bacchus from Lugdunum (Musée de la civilisation Gallo-Romain; photo: Athena Review).

A collection of mosaics from houses in Roman Lugdunum displayed in Gallery XV of the Musée de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine in Lyon includes this colorful panel of Bacchus wearing a floral crown.

Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and the theater, was equivalent to the Greek god Dionysius. This floor mosaic dates from the 2nd-3rd century AD, and was part of the decoration of a dining hall in Roman Lyon.
