Lyon: Portrait sculpture of Timestheus

Sculpture of Timestheus (Musée de la civilisation Gallo-Romain).

This finely carved portrait bust shows Timestheus, an imperial administrator in Lugdunum (Roman Lyon) during the early 3rd century AD. Timestheus was also the father-in-law of the Roman emperor Gordian III (AD 238-244).

The sculpture, displayed in Gallery VI of the Musée de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine  in Lyon, expresses a somber, highly developed realism which became typical of the best examples of ancient Roman portraiture.
