Vienne: Temple of Augustus and Livia

Temple of Augustus and Livia in Vienne (photo: Athena Review).

The Temple of Augustus and Livia, built at the end of the 1st century BC, survives today basically intact in the Place du Palais along the Rue des Clercs. Closely similar to the Maison Carrée in Nîmes, the Temple in Vienne was originally dedicated to Augustus, then rededicated to his wife Livia in AD 41 by her grandson Claudius, the Roman emperor who was born in nearby Lyon.

The columns are scarred by remains of wall fastenings when the temple was used in prior centuries as a storehouse and museum.
