Jerusalem: Pool of Bethesda (1857 photo)

Jerusalem: Pool of Bethesda (Beato 1857/NYPL Archive)

This early photo by Antonio Beato, one of a series taken in 1857, shows remains of the Roman and Byzantine Pool of Bethesda, located beside the church of St Anne. This rock-cut pool was one of several ancient reservoirs within the old, walled town of Jerusalem.

The image shows various architectural remains which line the relatively large pool. The two vaulted openings at left lead to passageways mapped by the British Palestine Exploration Fund in 1865-9.

Beato`s prints are archived in the New York Public Library (NYPL).
