Route of the 4th Voyage of Columbus in 1502 (Athena Review Image Archive)

The first contact between Spaniards and Mayans probably took place during the Fourth Voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1502.

En route from Hispaniola to the Darién peninsula of Panama, Columbus' expedition stopped at Bonacca (then called Guanaja) in the Bay Islands by Honduras. There they saw a large trading canoe of a type now also known from Postclassic murals at Chichén Itzá in Yucatán. Details of the 4th Voyage come from a journal by the son of Columbus, Ferdinand Colón.
