Map of Orellana's Amazon voyage (1541-2)

Map of Orellana's voyage down the Amazon (Athena Review Image Archive)

In 1541-1542, Francisco de Orellana led a party of Spaniards down the entire length of the Amazon River, named for women warriors they encountered after months of sailing downriver. The primary account of the expedition is by Friar Gaspar de Carvajal, the chaplain who accompanied Orellana and kept a journal of these unique events (Medelin 1934).

After innumerable close escapes with tribal villages along the Amazon, their boats at length entered the Atlantic Ocean on August 26, 1542, exactly eight months after they began their river trek.
