Agrigento: Hellenistic tragic Dionysios mask (3rd-1st c. BC)

Agrigento: terracotta figurine of tragic mask (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

This male terracotta figurie head portrays a tragic mask, identified with Dionysios, god of the theater. It was found in the Hellenistic-Roman settlement at Agrigento and dates from the 3rd-1st century BC.

The figurine bears a striking similarity to later, Roman tragic masks portrayed in 3rd and 4th style murals at Pompeii and elsewhere, sometimes also associated with the cult of Isis and Osiris.
